Went to install the cams last night after head was reinstalled (finally) and after I cleaned up and re oiled the valve cups/tappets and installed (all went back in same holes they came out of), when push down on the cups noticed approx half of them have some squishy play, some very minor like .5 mm, some perhaps 1mm, and at least one at just about 2mm.. and othere were totally rock solid with no movement at all.. the squishy ones bounce back up to regular height. also before I installed them, I spun the inner piece under the cups and some spun freely and some got hung up and felt like they had hitches when spinning? all cam cups I have dealt with before were on motorcycle motors and had "shims under bucket" for cam'valve clearance adjustments so I have no clue how these hydraulic ones work to maintain proper cam/valve clearance..
WIS says if squishy to replace em, but not sure if perhaps they could have lost their prime being out for so long or if perhaps cleaning the crud off with parts cleaner and blowing clean got some oil out plus be pushing down on them could have made em squishy? I did notice oil oozing from the holes of a few and I'm sure some came out as I was cleaning with solvent and blowing dry?
WIS says if clattery tappetts at start up, after sittign long time, etc. to run and should go away after they get reprimed..
before I tore it down there was no real noticable clicking sound, but then again timing and balance chain were so loud perhaps could have masked valve tappet clicking?
These tappets are not cheap.. I am inclined to put it back together and run it to see how it fares/if they prime and don't click, etc... and if do click after running perhaps replace later?? not too hard to yank cams and replace later if need be?
Is there any potential harm in doing this/perhaps having tappets and running it? I'm just at a $$$$ breaking point and really hoped to get cams in and timed tonight so can throw turbo on and crank it up..
appreciate any opinions on the subject!!
many thanks..
