I got my Xenon kit working 100%! Posted by B Millar [Email] (#1109) [Profile/Gallery] (more from B Millar) on Sat, 1 Aug 2009 14:28:47 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Back in April I wrote a few posts about installing a "Xentec" cheapie aftermarket Xenon kit in my '04 9-5 that came with halogen headlights. I got the ballasts mounted and all the wires run and they looked great. Really. But... I couldn't switch them off. I had my DRL fuse pulled and never had issues with my halogens shutting off, but if I shut the Xenons off with the switch on the dash all hell broke loose. They started strobing and making loud clicking sounds. Scared the crap out of me. If I shut them off via the ignition, no problem. This was a deal breaker so I took the Xenons out and put Silverstars in.
FINALLY someone on Saab C-E-N-T-R-A-L pointed out that I needed to cut wire 87a off the dipped beam relay in the relay box under the hood. For some reason this wire supplies the halogens with a residual voltage, maybe for the bulb check, I don't really know, but it supplied the HID ballasts with just enough juice to keep the bulbs flickering. So I put the Xenon bulbs back in today (the ballasts were still there), moved the Silverstars over to the highbeams, and rather than cutting anything, I just put a piece of electrical tape over the contact on the relay and put it back in. BANG IT WORKS!! All my lights are functional, all the switches do what they're supposed to do, and I don't have any bulb failure messages on my SID. I am one happy camper. I figured I would post this on here for anyone in the future who tries to install one of these kits.
