Personal anecdotes about reliability are not a statistically valid way to judge a car. You should look at aggregated numbers from places like Consumer Reports or Real Delta.com.
My wife has a 2001 XC70 (bought new) that has been very reliable, even though CR rates them as below average in reliability. She had to replace a drive shaft a couple of years ago ($400) and her dealer charged $100 to upgrade the transmission software, but that's about it.
I much prefer driving my 2006 9-5, but her XC70 is roomy and comfortable for long trips, and she gets longer mileage out of her tires than I do on my Saab. I'm on my thirde set at 67K, she is still on her second at 105K.
Any individual car is a crap shoot when it comes to reliability, although good maintenance will better the odds.
