I posted this several days ago, but again...no response. Since we are talking about "Brake Pop", maybe I'll get some discussion this time..
I have Akebono front pads and they are terrific, HOWEVER, I have a Saab brake caliper issue that I have asked about in the past, but never got much discussion going. Perhaps now I will. Even though the Akebonos have great performance, they, like most brake pads, are attached to steel backing plates that are stamped out of sheet steel. As a result, the part of the brake caliper casting which captures the brake pad tends to get scored and gouged by the unmachined and non-uniform edge of the steel brake pad backing plate. Even my 1987 cheapo Nissan 2wd pickup truck uses a stainless steel sheet metal insert that also acts as an anti-vibration spring for the pad. The hard smooth surface of this material prevents the casting part of the caliper from getting dinged up by the unmachined edge of the brake pad backing plate when it presses into the caliper sliding groove. Perhaps the lack of something like this on my 1999 9-5 (and all other Saab caliper designs) contributes to the occasional crunching or popping sounds I get from the brakes. Any comment?
Thanx,
Kirk D.
