They are held in place by a screw (up to 01). But what happens is that the tiny part of turn signal assembly that work as a bracket for that screw can break and the assembly falls off.
02 and up they changed the fastener to some plastic clip and I think it was a campaign out for a new metal clip design (P/N 5337167) between VIN 23000132-33002223 to make the turn signal stay in place.
But if the plastic thingy is broken on the 02 and up, I don't think the metal clip can work anyway.
