Well, the 9-5 was flat-bedded to my garage today. I removed the cooling fans and shroud and was able to gain access to the compressor outlet hose. After removing the hose from the turbo I stuck a wooden stick down into the lowest point and found, after removing the stick, that there's about an eighth inch of oil at the bottom of the hose. It looks like I'll be removing the Garrett and will probably replace it with a new GT1752. Although I have an excellent TD04 from a '98 B234 sitting on the bottom shelf of my workbench, I'm not sure if I want to go the more involved route of changing the oil lines and compressor housing. I've got plenty of experience working on 9000's and I can safely say that things are packed together much tighter in the 9-5. The 9000 is much more mechanic-friendly. The 9-5 chassis is obviously tighter, but the 9000 is much easier to service.
