I have been b*tching a lot about the harsh ride of my Aero and all the rattles and creaks I get from the darn thing. I spent a while yesterday trying to eliminate a bunch and I actually made a fair amount of progress!
Every time I went over a large, sharp bump, my whole dash would creak. I could push lightly on the SID, radio, and ACC and recreate some of the creaking. So I took it all out and put black felt everywhere! Between the dash plastic and the radio cage, on the top and bottom of the SID, and the bottom of the ACC. Everything fits much tighter in there and I can push on it and it's 98% SILENT! I also had to add a lot of padding to the plastic covers on the ends of the dash, like the one that covers the fuse panel on the driver side. They were rattling around too. If whoever gets this car next starts digging into the dash they are going to be scratching their head, haha.
My mom's new-to-her '06 Jetta is built like a freaking TANK. It's very solid for a quasi "economy" car. It definitely has me lusting for something German like an A4 but I am too loyal to Saab. All I know is Saab best be beefing up interior quality if they want me to buy another. If I paid $42k back in 2004 for my car I would have driven it through the glass front of the showroom demanding my money back. I know all 9-5's aren't like this, my '01 SE wasn't rattle-free but it was a million times better than the '04. No doubt in my mind the Aero suspension brings out the worst.
