For more than a year now my 2000 9-5SE V6 (~104,000 mi) has had a strange problem: on occasions, the idle will surge between ~600 and ~1100 rpm, occasionally stalling the engine when under load (ie, maneuvering in a parking lot). The problem is transient last for a few days or less and then disappearing by itself and not reappearing for weeks or even months. (Of course, there is no sign of this when I have the opportunity to tell my mechanic about it!) There are no idiot lights (ie CEL) or SID messages associated with this behavior, and normal driving is not affected.

Any bright ideas about what might cause this? I do not want to enrich my friendly (and very competent) mechanic by paying him to chase phantoms, but I'd like to solve the problem.
