I find the WR works fine as a snow tire. My daughter has them in Maine year round on her '95 9000 and I use them in New Hampshire as winter treads on my 9K. I'll probably put them on my wife' 9-5 SportWagon this fall as the Dunlop M3s are toast. My kid needs a new set this year, too.
However, IMHO, separate summer and winter tires are the best way to go. It does cost more, but some of the cost is made up by each set of tires lasting longer. I have used alloys for the WRs on my car, steelies on my wife's 9-5.
