Help! Erratic turbo

A couple days ago I reported surging. Went away after few miles, came back today.

Last time was at highway speeds, today in traffic, often at idle while sitting at a red light.

At idle, boost gage went well into the amber for a second or two at a time, accompanied by a kind of clunk (like the car going into gear) and sort of a rumble noise which went away when the turbo settled down again. Lasted 1 or 2 seconds at a time; the whole episode lasted about 5 minutes, then the car ran fine for the 50 mile hiway drive home.

At hiway speeds a couple days ago, the boost gage jumped up, sometimes going almost into the red and the car would surge forward for just a second or so. Again, this went off & on for about 5 minutes, then the car settled down and ran normally.

Obviously, something is making the turbo overboost.

It's a 9-5 Linear, 2002, 108,000 miles.

What should I look for? What's the likely culprit? What's the cure?

Any ideas would be helpful.
