Lawrence (LM) wrote Sept 7 in a thread below, that I started Sept 6, that his Saab mechanic mangaged to remove/replace his V6 alternator by droppng the subframe a few inches instead of the WIS recommended process of removing the RH outboard driveshaft. The purpose of either is to create enough clearance to pass the alternator through the inner wheel arch.

I tried the subframe lowering last night without success. In addition to removing the 4 rear frame bolts and loosening the 2 front ones (with jacks underneath) I tried undoing the RH engine mount to allow the frame to drop enough. It wouldn't. I soon realized that the steering shaft was holding the frame up because the rack is mounted to the subframe. I didn't want to risk fooling around with the rack or undoing the steering linkage so I reverted to the WIS process of taking out the RH outer drive axle.

I have taken the suspension apart before and removing the RH driveshaft was a quick process. It is connected to the intermediate shaft which means you don't have to deal with the inner drive axle stub pulling out of the tranny final drive and leaking oil. It simply drives out with a hammer and a drift punch against the inner universal joint housing. I used a piece of oak as a punch. Of course you have to remove the main axle nut at the wheel hub and remove the outer splined shaft from there too. As per WIS, I also took out the oil pressure sender and had to wedge the engine forward about 1/4" to create enough of a passage for the alternator.

Anyhow, the new alternator is installed and connected but I was too tired to put the subframe and suspension all back together last night. Today will be a much easier task.

The old alternator was definately bad. It rubs internally when I spin it and it has a burned electrical smell.
