Thanks to RegQ for advice on our front suspension clunk! It was indeed a swaybar link. Here are some notes on replacement.
The original part has plastic races which are quickly mashed (just 65K in our 04 Aero wagon), leaving lots of play. I expect the other side to go soon, thus bought 2 from eEuroparts. The ScanTech replacement part shows no sign of plastic, so I am expecting better life. If not, I'll use heim joints like in my race car.
As RegQ suggested, be sure to have both front wheels at the same height (e.g. off the ground) so there is no torque on the sway bar.
To remove the old stock links, you need an 18mm deep socket and, once you have untorqued it, an 18mm box wrench and an 8 mm socket or wrench to hold or turn the end of the stud.
The ScanTech replacement come with 19mm nuts and a better means of holding the stud from turning via parallel flats 16mm apart, using a thin open end wrench. I ground a normal 16mm wrench (~1/4" thick) down to fit the flats on the stud without messing up the rubber boot. Torque to 65 Ft-Lbs.
