This is a little long but I'd really appreciate anyone reading through and providing any insight you may have...
My 2004 Aero's automatic transmission has been misbehaving a little bit over the past week or so. It has fresh fluid and is right smack in between the MIN/MAX on the dipstick when checking the fluid following the procedure in the owner's manual.
From day one (bought with 31k miles) it shifts HARD from 2 to 1 in manual mode when slowing down to a stop. I hit the (-) paddle and it feels like it goes into neutral. Then 3...2...1... BANG! First gear. I have gotten used to shifting it back to drive when coming to a stop down an incline to avoid this.
Last week it started delaying shifting up in Drive. So for example when accelerating in 3rd (or any gear really) and I let off the gas, it sticks in third for a couple seconds (I can feel it dragging) then it shifts to 4th and the resistance goes away as the revs drop and car lurches a little tiny bit as the next gear engages. I've noticed it on all shift ups, 2 to 3, 3 to 4, 4 to 5... Even overtaking cars when I floor it, it downshifts, and then when I'm done there's an annoying delay where the engine is revving high and essentially engine-braking before it shifts back up the the higher gear.
It does NOT do this in manual mode though! It up-shifts spot-on (factoring in the slight delay that comes with Sentronic to begin with). Sooo, that makes me think (hope) that I've got a software or adaptation issue rather than a mechanical (transmission or valve body) problem.
My car is an extremely early 2004 model. Built in August of 2003 and is number 890 off Assembly line A in Trollhaten for the 2004-MY. I know there's a software update out for the 2002-2003 and EARLY 2004 models, however no one would confirm that my car falls into that category without plugging in a Tech-II with a hefty fee.
So my question to the people who deal with these cars every day (cough cough SWEDECAR or saabdoc ahem) or to anyone who has had this problem before, would it be worth looking into a software update and re-adaptation, or is that all a bunch of hooey they make you do when in the end you really need a new transmission or valve body?
Thank you SO much in advance for reading through this and offering any help!
