1) the sensors are independent, but are controlled by the module, located under the center console, which users accelerometers for the longitudinal direction and the tranverse direction
2) I have not heard of side airbag sensors that use air pressure change to cause a signal to be sent to the computer module
3) the airbags are controlled independently by the computer and can deploy in any order or combination, according to the deployment algorithm
4) airbag deployments in the manner you described are quite rare - non-deployments are also rare, because of system redundancies
I would expect more than just an issue with accelerometers and sensors - there could be an electrical issue with the control module.
