I've put 9,000 miles on my Aero Wagon with Nokian NRW winter tires this winter, and I've been amazed at how LITTLE tire wear I've experienced. They look almost new.
Some thoughts:
Tire choice: Granted, the NRW isn't a snow tire, but it is a decent winter tire. The compound is not as soft as in a pure snow tire, but it has been designed to stick well in really cold weather.
Warm Weather: We've had a very mild and warm winter, so I would expect that most of us would experience higher than normal winter tire wear because of the warm weather. (I'm north of Boston)
High Speeds, Limited Braking: Most, but not all, of my miles are accumulated at high speeds on limited access highways - lots of heat generated there! As a result, I do very little braking per mile driven - maybe that's where your tire wear is coming from - your stopping habits.
Manual vs. Automatic: I have a manual. Maybe that impacts tire wear? Maybe gentler braking because of down-shifting? I wonder if there is any difference in tire wear and/or brake wear between manual and auto trannies.??
Tire Pressure: I run high tire pressure - 40 lbs. That may also help with the tire mileage.
