I don't own one but I have ridden in one. My friend has a 2004 or 2005ish Mazda6 V6 with leather and all the good stuff. I don't think anything has changed dramatically between then and 2007/8.
The car is TINY on the inside. I was really surprised. I was in the back seat with 2 other average sized guys and I had no room at all. I had to tilt my head inboard because if it was straight up I hit the window. My 9-5's backseat is a football stadium compared to that thing.
The V6 sounded wheezy and it was struggling to move the car with five passengers. My friend was trying to drive aggressively but the car didn't like that. I can't imagine the 4-cyl... The inside was very plasticky and hollow feeling, and the orangy-red dash lights weirded me out (maybe those have changed?). Mazdas have always given me the feeling they have thin sheet-metal and thin paint that likes to fade and flake off after about 7 years. Otherwise they're very reliable, I think.
I like the styling of the 6, and I bet it's fun to drive without a full load. It's definitely not a Saab though. I think if size isn't an issue for you it would be an okay choice. By "looked at" have you driven one yet?
