I was having the same problem with My MY05 Arc Wagon this summer - could always smell a little bit of coolant.
Finally, I noticed the drip underneath and took it in to replace the coolant bypass valve. The diaphragm was only slightly disrupted, based on my visual inspection.
If you can't find anything else, for example, after securing the expansion bottle cap, etc. you may have the same slow leak of the bypass valve.
there are lots of posts here of what to do when it fails catastrophically, but i sm starting to think that it should be a Wear item, on our PM lists.

P.S. I topped up the system with the Prestone orange from Canadian Tire.
