I'll try to help with your questions.

1. The failure of a HID xenon bulb is evidenced by flickering, reduced light output and a change in color (generally from bluish-white to brownish-yellow.

2. Life of a xenon bulb is measured in hours, not miles. A fair amount of slower time-consuming local driving could make your 56K miles equivalent to 80K miles on the highway. Of noted significance is use of the xenon's as daytime-running lights; that really shortens the life.

3. The bulb comes with the ballast as one integrated assembly. It is known as a D1S and is available from many sources.

4. Where to buy :
- Amazon.com $73.00 (by Hella) http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000H0KN46/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B000H0KN46&linkCode=as2&tag=thesaabnetwork
- eEuroparts $109.00 (by Hella)
- Your Saab dealer $150.00-$200.00 (probably Hella, OSRAM or Philips)

5. If you find a xenon bulb on eBay for a ridiculous price you'll get a cheap Chinese substitute. Brands noted above are known reputable manufacturers.

6. Replacement is an easy DIY project. DO NOT TOUCH THE BULB! If you decide to have someone else do it, use a trusted indy. Saab dealers are known to get $500 - $600 for a pair installed.

7. Consider doing both at the same time. IT's likely you'll have to do the other soon (3-6 mos.)
