Well, first thing to try would be to be really, really close to the car (maybe even inside) and try playing with the remote lock/unlock. The 9-5s have a notoriously short range. Maybe you are just trying too far away? I know people have tried to rig the antenna to increase the range, but with no great success - some small improvements, though.
