Where and how you drive have an enormous influence.
New front brakes at 17K? Yikes! When I traded-n my Passat at 170K it had the original front pads. The rear ones were replaced once. My 9-5 has all original brakes at 72K.
My driving is mostly on semi-rural roads or in small towns. I also tend to brake with the engine when approaching a stop sign or red light. When I lived in NYC brakes rarely lasted more than 30K miles.
