It seems odd the the non-registering temp indicator does throw a code and CEL, I believe it should, and also put the mixture into "estimate mode". Wrong mixture would incurr wrong timing, which might account for your noises. The low temp could be due to oil thermostat stuck open. Or if it is your 40K old coolant thermostat not closing (not inconcievable) then the oil thermostat would be stay shut. I mention this because if the oil thermo had been shut for a while, it would be harboring stagnant oil.And if it then opened, it would release that stagnant oil into your system. I had this happen after replacing my coolant thermostat. My oil suddenly went dirty, and the oil light came on at idle, i think because the old oil had lost viscosity. If you do check oil remember to flush without the oil thermostat before putting in your 5W-40. I would go ahead and replace all your 4mm vac hoses, need 6 ft, less than $10. Also check the hose from the evap nonsense to the T before the boost control valve, it can crack. And check the vacuum push fit bushings, the o rings can go hard and leak. It could be an evil O2 sensor, but have no experience there. Basically do your best to get mixture and timing, and oil and temp good with the basics before seeking more expensive gremlins. Good luck! Chris
