That's a tough one to answer without seeing the engine. These engine are not known to crack the block when overheating but we don't know HOW overheated it got.
Some people drive the car until it doesn't manage to go further, they just down shift and step harder on the accelerator until the engine seize up.
In those cases, it is no use trying to save the old engine but to find a good used one and put it in instead.
I can't say where on the block to look but the shop will most likely show you the crack.
If a light over heat session has happened it might be enough to resurface the heads and put a new head gasket in there. The warpage of the heads also tell a story how badly overheated it got.
Today's cars are much more sensitive to overheat sessions due to very soft piston rings. You might end up with an oil burning engine if it is rescued from a too bad overheat.
