Getting into gear

My 2001 9-5 sometimes shifts into drive correctly. Other times it seems to want to start off in 4th. By turning off the switch and restarting the engine, it goes into drive as it should and shifts ok through the gears.
What is the problem?? Could it be the selector switch or something else.
Help appreciated
