Before 2006 a 9-5 Aero was a 9-5 Aero... high output turbo, sport suspension, sport seats, etc... In 2006 ALL 9-5's went to the high output turbo, 260hp 2.3t. The Aero name was dropped in 2006, but you could get a "Sport" package with the sport suspension and seats. The Aero name came back for 2007, but still came with the same stuff as the sport package.

I'm not familiar with the pulley/serp belt problems on the 9000's, but I wouldn't say they're problematic on the 9-5's. Just keep up with the 60k mile belt services and you should be fine. The automatic in the 9-5 is LIGHTYEARS ahead of the auto in the 9000. Just keep an eye on the fluid because a lot of people report that the fluid turns brown pretty early and can cause slipping and stuff. I bought my 2004 Aero with 31k miles and it was slipping a bit between 3 and 4. My fluid was a little brown so I had it flushed and no more problems in the last 12k miles. As the 2004+ 9-5's are aging I'm observing a lot of people (myself included) having issues with the vacuum and PCV systems. They're not expensive things to replace- just some plastic check valves and refreshing of the deteriorated rubber hoses. The ACC system can be a little flaky with the blend doors and stop arms freaking out, otherwise late model (2004+) 9-5's are really reliable cars. Good luck!
