Chances are they hold a higher value because a lot of them are garage queens, and get polished more than they get driven. Road and Track did a comprehensive review of the previous generation M-3 about 8 months ago, and quite frankly, some of the defects that they had widely reported were pretty unimpressive for what is supposed to be the "ultimate Driving Machine". In quite a few cars, the plastic water pump impeller would fracture, and pieces of the vanes would clog the cooling system, resulting in overheating and warping of the head in about thirty seconds. In a handful of other cars, they found significant cracking in some of the stress and attachment points for the rear suspension.
Is this the stuff that should be happening in a highly sought after premium performance car? Not in my opinion.
I wonder how many owners of "M" series cars just use them as everyday transportation, and what kind of reliability they have? Same question for AMG Mercedes drivers?
