this was a problem on my MY99 wagon last year - an attempt to solve it a local dealer backfired when they jammed something inside the latch and broke the microswitch control the "open-hatch" indicator and the wagon cargo lighting!!!!!
something thin and flexible, like a thickness gauge might be better.
At the end of the day, I had to replace the whole thing - the light in the rear eventually goes off, but the light on the dash is annoying.
If you have an indy nearby who knows what they are doing, take it there. A knowledgeable techie will be able to help you out.
By the way, the plastic striker liner came off and jammed mine.
