Yep, I would agree with most that this is probably the turbo. One way to check to see if your turbo is on it's last legs it to remove the air inlet pipe to the turbo where you can actually grab the turbo blade / shaft. See if there is ANY play either laterally or up and down. If so then the turbo really needs to be replaced. If not, then you can run and check it about once a 1/4 or 1/2 year or so. This does not take too long to do. I put a rebuilt one in (LPT) at about 115k and now at about 160k it's finally starting to smoke again (I assume, could be rings, valves etc, will have to check).
MPG, average about 24-26 for an automatic is about right, but open road should be about 30+ mpg (no wind). I have removed the back exhaust resonator and that gives a 1-3 mpg especially on the open road. Manual should get 1-3 mpg more on the open road.
I have found that the winter formula gas that we are getting in the SE WI area reduces that MPG by about 1-3. JeffO2
