A few years back, I towed a 5x8 utility trailer (bought from Home Depot, IIRC) laden with Vintage Saab Parts from NJ to Atlanta, then dead-headed it (towed empty) back through the mountains of northern Georgia & Western North Carolina, with no troubles at all. This was behind a 1991 9000 turbo 5-speed. Could easily forget about the empty trailer when the roads got "interesting"...
Biggest thing will be your maintenance and care of the trailer. If the trailer is kept covered, and everything is checked and lubed before each trip, you'll likely not have much problem at all. If you don't, don't be surprised if bearings or tires fail on the second or third trip with the trailer...
And make sure you have a spare tire for the trailer...
Anything you look at with a hitch will be "highway rated". But I don't think they've updated that spec since the 30's, so "highway speed" is 20 MPH!
Good luck!
