Stumble / surge at highway speed. Posted by aerohead [Email] (#2210) [Profile/Gallery] (more from aerohead) on Wed, 6 Jan 2010 21:44:30 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I want to give something back to this incredible board, I gain so much it I thought I'd return the favor with my story:
I had the intermittent stumble surge thing going on at around 70 mph. It came on at around 60k miles and in two separate $400 repairs at the stealer, the problem was not solved. They replaced my DI cassette with one that didn't help and they didn't give me the old working one for a spare. They replaced the mass air sensor because it was 'out of spec' but it made no difference. "Live with it until it throws a code" I was advised. At 85k, I get the mother of all stumbles on the way to grandma's house Christmas Eve and it goes into Limp Mode. The CEL comes on steady, the engine doesn't idle and stalls at the stop signs, and its just not running right. I sniff the tailpipe while my son keeps it revved enough to not die and I determine I'm not passing unburned fuel so the cat isn't at risk and we forge on another 100 miles. I go to Autozone the day after Christmas and get the code read for free, P1230. They don't have a clue but a quick check on this site and I figure out it is the code for throttle body assembly. Of course, Autozone doesn't have one so I limp it another 200 miles home after Christmas. I ordered a new Genuine Saab replacement from Eeuroparts and have it in a few days. I install it and the problem is completely solved. The additional benefit was that it corrected poor performance like when you've just replaced your plugs that have been in too long. I also installed PCV #6 upgrade while I was in there for additional piece of mind. Many thanks to the fixmysaab website for without their detailed installation instructions, I would have never figured out the upgrade. No installation diagrams in the GM upgrade kit.
Thank you for feeding great information to this site. Keep up the great work.
