Odd problem of temp gauge and CEL

Once or twice in the life of my 2002 Arc wagon (95k miles), the temp gauge has dropped to zero while I was driving. It always resets when I restart the engine. Three weeks ago, it happened again, but the CEL came on. That has occasionally happened, too, and it always stopped coming on after a certain number of starts. Last night, for the first time in three weeks, the CEL did not illuminate when I started the engine, but on the way home, the temp gauge dropped to zero and the CEL is on again. The car runs fine. Any thoughts out there? We only have one dealer in Montana, and it's a long ways from where I am.
