Incredible belt squeal after idler

Recently acquired a 9-5 2.3 LPT automatic. There was some grinding noise in the pulley network and from the inspection on the belt, it seemed smart preventative maintenance to replace the the idler, and the upper pulley (the one normally dropped to use a short belt). All bearings in the pulleys removed were rough when I spun them in my hands as compared to the smooth bearings in the new replacements. I did not replace the belt as it had no cracks or wear and I recall the PO had replaced the belt only a few thousand ago.
I did the pulley replacement after listening to a lot of noise and thumping coming from the pulley area. Inspection has not indicated any obstructions or debris in that area.
Upon startup the belt now has an INCREDIBLE squeal that is intermittent. Turning off the ACC will have an effect on stopping the squeal, but at this time it is not clear if the squeal only happens on cold startup and might dissipate after the engine is warm. I'd kind of like to resolve the problem before worrying about band-aid fixes like turning off the ACC.
Using a long screwdriver to my ear, when I touch the AC compressor I hear a lot of rough sounding rumbling.
Any suggestion on the belt squeal?
Is it possible to replace the bearings in the AC Compressor (will this necessitate depleting the R134?)?
