Front suspension design on NG 9-5? Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Sun, 28 Mar 2010 05:53:06 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
GM issued a news blurb last week regarding a special front suspension to be included on future Buick LaCrosse models. Since the LaCrosse and the NG 9-5 are both based off the Opel Insignia, I wondered if this new strut design (call the H-P Strut, or High Performance Strut, on Buicks) will also be on the new 9-5.
On current McPherson strut suspensions, the bottom of the strut is bolted directly to the steering hub. This makes the top mounted strut bearing effectively the upper ball joint, as the entire strut rotates with the front wheels, and can cause strange front steering geometry as the King Pin Angle (the angle of an imaginary line drawn between the centers of the lower and upper ball joints) can become excessive. A too large king pin angle was stated in the GM news blurb as contributintg to Torque Steer in front wheel drive vehicles.
The "new" front end geometry on the LaCrosse has the lower end of the strut bolt to a yoke rather than the steering knuckle. The steering knuckle is held by more convential upper and lower ball joints secured to the yoke. The lower mounting point of the yoke is the end of the lower control arm (actually the only control arm). The inboard mounting points for the control arm do not change. The strut tower mounting points for the upper end of the strut do not change.
Having the upper point of rotation for the hub located closer to the hub itself, and not be dependent on body geometry, allows for a more neutral king pin angle and elimination of torque steer. GM's claim from blurb.
So back to my original question. Has any one seen a cut-away of the front suspension, or read a decription of such, that would indicate the NG 9-5 will have this new suspension feature too?
