Haven't driven new 5-speed auto. I prefer manuals b/c:
1) Every car I've ever owned has refused to start at some point and push-starting car has typically been only option. One can't do that with autos.
2) Autos tend to snap power and fuel-economy, though they're getting better. Don't know if 2.3T 185hp engine was designed from ground-up to use an auto -- I suspect not. And while it's entirely subjective, my new Linear wagon w/ manual shift feels faster than sister-in-laws 6-cylinder 9-5 SE w/ auto.
3) I tend to coast a lot in neutral. Personal habit. One can do that with an auto, but it's a little dicier.
4) Manuals are less likely to get stolen than autos these days. I suspect that's because car thieves tend to be younger and don't grow up learning how to shift.
Have driven tiptronic extensively. An improvement over normal autos, but not even close to mimicking feel of a standard-shift. Chose 9-5 over VW/Audi b/c: 1) better value -- interest-free looked pretty good; 2) reliability (a problem w/ A6s in particular); 3) one can't get an A6 w/ manual unless one pays $50k for an allroad; 4) drove various models and liked Saab best; 5) Reccomendations from friends/family. 9-5 owners are almost religious when praising their cars.
