A healthy running 9-5 can run on 87 octane fuel without spark knock, pre-detonation, pinging, etc. They're really all the same. You'll just notice a big-time reduction in power. If filling up with premium DOES make the sound go away, I'd look for a confused sensor (MAF maybe).
