Not to make light of your concerns, but really think you have a psycho sematic situation. You have convinced yourself that it will blow up, so must drive ever more moderatly.
The 2.3 litre engine is essentially the same as what I have in the 9000 Aero and my 98 9000. The horsepower has been increased some, but the engines are indeed very similar. At 238,000 miles on the 98 it pulls well and does not use any oil. Oh BTW my 2004 9-5 Aero is now over 150,000 miles and does the same.
Keep up with oil changes, check fluid levels and enjoy your car !
