Who's is your mechanic? Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] (#81) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Mike Lynch) on Fri, 14 May 2010 18:04:02 In Reply to: cost in repair per year?, susan, Fri, 14 May 2010 11:22:18 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I would question the integrity of your mechanic. Perhaps they are overselling a bit or just plain incompetent. You'll certainly get a reading on that if you tell us who it is as the Saab community is fairly small and close knit. I could see a run of bad luck for one year, but repairs totaling $2-3k for every year would be alarming.
Are you still going to the dealer? Dealers more so than independent mechanics can oversell or just plain mis-diagnose problems and are most certainly quite a bit more expensive.
A brief review of your previous posts indicates some expensive problems. A power steering leak can be expensive and a lower timing cover leak is another one that could cost a ton.
There's a certain art of cost effectiveness in fixing leaks. Often mechanics expect everything to be dry and clean and they will want you to spend a great deal of money to maintain that clean and dry status. Fine on a new car or a car under warranty, but as cars get older a certain amount of minor leaking and grungyness needs to be tolerated. A usual pattern by my independent is to advise me of these weeps/leak things and then we revisit them after the next 5,000 mile service and see how bad they really are before recommending major resealing and repairs.
