I've used T7Suite to get an equivalent stage 1 tune, and it adds a fair amount of kick to my Linear wagon. It is most definitely noticeable, but I would be slightly disappointed if I paid the full price of one of the aftermarket tuners for just a stage 1, though. If I had the required hardware and could skip straight to a stage 3, it may be a different story.
I've seen the Maptuner, a similar PPC unit, in action and that works really easily, but never driven a car with it tuned.
