1) yes, you DO need to hold the button for longer than with a regular opener.

2) if your garage door opener has "rolling codes", there is an additional step, which is detailed in teh instructions for the door opener.

When I did mine, I programmed the mirror to act like the fob remote. That was fine. green lights all a-blinking. THEN, I had to go to the door opener, and program the mirror to the door opener. On mine (a Genie, IIRC), you press a button on the receiver, and an LED lights. Then, you have 30 seconds to get in the car, and push - and hold - the programmed button on the mirror. The LED on the receiver blinks and goes out, and then it's programmed.

Beware, though, if you have more than a couple remotes programmed for your door. I ran into a 7 remote limit on my receiver, and had to call in all the remotes - including my Saab, and my Sister's BMW - and do them all up after clearing the memory. What was happening is that once you fill it up with remotes, you could program another, but the last one you programmed prior "fell off"...
