Fuel Line Fitting Problem HELP NEEDED!

Hello,
So on our 1999 9-5 2.3 liter I was in the middle of replacing the fuel pump when I accidentally broke the Return nozzle that plugs into the top of the fuel pump. DAMNIT! So a 20 minute job turns into something longer.
I was able with a lot of effort to remove the fuel line from that return nozzle but the end of the fuel line was so mangled from how much force I had to use that when I plugged it into the new return nozzle the hose leaked at the joint.
So my question is how do you correctly join the fuel line to the return nozzle? The hose is made out of a very stiff plastic (rubber) that seems to have little elasticity and it has to stretch a whole lot to get over those 3 barbs. Is the hose flaired at the factory? Heat shrunk? Heat softened? Or does it just require a ton of brute force ala a purpose built jig like someone on Saabnet made out of wood.
Anybody use a type of clamp to seal these? Anyway to soften this type of stiff fuel line hose?
Thanks for all your help.
Jeremy
