The ball joint separator (AKA, pickle fork) has a tendency to rip the rubber boot on the tire rod ends if you aren't very careful. Unscrew the nut on the tie rod end until it is flush with the end of the mounting bolt. Place a jack under the nut and start lifting until you hear a pop. Lower the jack an finish unscrewing the bolt.
