bypassing a blown turbo

I have an '01 9-5 wagon 4 cyl. It began blowing smoke and used 2 qts of oil in 60 miles. Diagnosed as a blown turbo, my mechanic bypassed oil and coolant feeds to the turbo. It runs ok, albeit underpowered. Has anyone else done this and how long has the car run this way? The book value on the car is well below the cost of replacing the turbo.
