Last winter, driving back from a 3 month stint in Bryan, TX, my engine died.
In the middle of nowhere, and with a local [400 mile away suggestion of a known friend] I took the blown engine to a shop halfway between Bryan and Houston -- not very close to my home in Louisiana. And, not very close to much else.
The mechanic eventually managed to locate and replace the engine with a used engine at 55k. When I went to pick up the car, it strangely took 10 minutes for him to bring it up from out behind. I looked at the engine, identified a hose not attached, and that the engine/key/transmission lock was poorly reset, so that the key wouldn't come out. Fixed, those, and in the ensuing discussion, discovered that he did not test the engine's 4 cyl for pressure [can't remember the name of that....], and I regret not making him do so at a cold start. Because....
When I returned home, parked the car for a few days, and then drove somewhere locally, it belched. Until warmed. Being winter, it did that alot, with air temps 40-60. As it warmed, it more at quit doing that; and I debated driving all the way back, with the car, and didn't.
Once in while lately, it now continues that belch, which is pretty aggressive, in the same fashion only during the warm up period [its been cooler at night, into the 70s. Then, it stops. Either when warm, or after a brief stop, and restart. I can't say it happens when it is 90 outside, but I haven't seen any smoke.
Despite that the belch stops, it will still smell a little at the exhaust. Oil consumption is not evident in the short term.
I am hoping it is not a cylinder ring, or other serious rot, brought on by an idiot in TX, and my own reticence about making him test the engine. Hoping it is some gadget plugged into the side of some port, somewhere, which fails, and causes just these problems. Or a ring/gasket at an easily accessible valve stem.
Suggestions/Hints?
Oh...a second question..... When you replace an engine, does the manual/standard procedure call for a test of the cylinders with the engine either on or off the car into which it is being placed? My gut says it would be silly not to, as who wants to do a full install on an engine [a used one, at that] and discover that it belches smoke after 20hrs of work...]
