Exessive pressure in coolant tank

I had a low coolant light flash when starting this morning. After letting it sit till cold I did notice the level was below the cold mark in the coolant tank. I released the cap and pressure released and the level went to where it should be (coolant was cold).
I'm noticing that even if my car sits for 2 days and I open the radiator cap a good amount of pressure releases.
The coolant cap, upper rad hose, temp sensor and thermo are all brand new.
I have occasionally smelled coolant from time to time and if I've eve topped off the tank it's only taken a cup or so after about 2K. I see no leaks (looked around the edges of the rad, around the heater bypass valve and all radiator hoses).
