A 2002 Arc sedan in black. Bought Feb 1, 2008, totaled May 17, 2009...
Got it with 84k on the clock, and no indication whatever that anything had been done to the TB. Gingerly drove it straight to my mechanic (a relatively short journey of less than 50 miles), to have the belt, tensioner, pulleys, thermostat and oil cooler cover replaced.
I know that the belt must be replaced every 60k, and that the pulleys. etc, don't last to the next 60k, so they really should be replaced every time, with the belt. I also know about the water pump.
I was just trying to get a feel for whether I should have it all done on this new car to me (Imola Red 2000 SE) really soon, or if it wouldn't be out of the question to drive it for up to 5 or 10 k.
Seems like the consensus is to just do it as soon as possible. Even got this from my mechanic last night. He's also a fan of the V6, and also suggested I listen for telltale squeals and squeaks on startup.
Biggest issue is it'll need to be driven 500 or more miles till it gets home with me (the logistics on this buy are going to be interesting!), and to my mechanic. I don't have scheduled time off till October (well, that isn't already booked for something else, that is...), where I could get the car to my mechanic & back. Worst case, it'll need to do an additional 1200 miles or so round trip to Maine in September...
