Question on Coolant Bypass Valve install...

I need to perform an emergency CBV replacement this afternoon. First time doing this job. I beleive I've got all the parts and tools lined up.
My questions...Do I need to drain the coolant to perform this job? If not, how much coolant will spill out? Can I clamp a hose to lessen the amount spilled? Which hose?
Thank you in advance.
