I have a 2007 9-5 Aero which I bought new in Aug. 2007.
My rationale for the Aero versus the non-Aero...... the seats.
The Aero has the contoured seats versus the non-Aero non-contoured seats. After driving the non-AERO I told the dealer that I didn't like the car because of the seats; in fact I disliked them so much that I cut the test drive short. After one hour in a then new Aero I simply told the dealer that I would buy the car.....and by the way how much?
Subsequent to my purchase, about a year or so later I replaced the stiff OEM shocks and struts with Koni FSD's. This solution gives you a nice comfortable/controlled ride when you want it, and good handling when it is called for.
By the way, I got my 2007 9-5 Aero with an automatic transmission, my first in 40 years. The manual transmission offers no advantage in either performance, economy or reliability. My complete round trip to Ohio and back to NJ garnered 30 MPG on a trip mixed with local and highway driving, and 80 mph cruising.
Last Friday I drove the new generation 2010 Aero at the 2010 SOC in Aurora; it's a huge leap into the future. You owe it to yourself to investigate with a dealer how you could get into one. The 2011 models will be available in Oct.
If a new 2011 9-5 doesn't fit your plans, bargain hard for a good used 9-5; and yes, I would aggressively pursue a 2006 or later. The 2006 and later have a stronger engine, XM integrated with the audio system, easier to use ACC controls, many invisible upgrades and an attractive styling upgrade over pre-2006 9-5's.
