I took my '03 arc (V6) in for service after recently buying it. The dealer is going to do the timing belt under warranty (and the catalytic converter for a separate issue).
The dealer is trying to convince me to get an "80k service" which would run about $1000. All my reading only shows service intervals in multiples of 30 (30,60,90,120k miles). It sounded a bit like a bad deal to me, especially since I understand a lot of the engine has to be moved around to get to the timing belt anyway, which that labor should be covered.
On the other hand, I have said to the dealer that they should feel free to replace the timing belt tensioners and water pump, since I don't want those to break later. I don't know if they've ever been replaced, but at 76k, I don't want to risk it. I expressed that I understand those items are not covered under the timing belt warranty, but the dealer seemed hesitant to replace those items. Even though, because of how far I live from the nearest dealer, that it would be extremely unlikely that I would bring the car back there if I did break down.
Besides the above questions:
The serpentine belt system has to be removed anyway during a timing belt change. So replacing that belt and pulleys shouldn't be too much additional labor, right?
The water pump isn't much more work to get to when changing the timing belt, right?
The timing belt tensioner isn't much more work when doing the belt anyway, right?
I should insist on the waterpump and tensioners being chanegd to avoid a nasty breakdown?
Is there such a thing as an 80k service, and if so what does it entail? They told me it was very difficult to change the rear spark plugs, and cost a lot extra in labor... I thought I had just read on here that it can be done without removing the intake, etc.
Are there any other items I should get worked on while they're doing all that? I don't want to be charged 'double' labor since they're having to do the timing belt anyway, but I want to make sure I get my bases covered as far as items that are prone to needing replacement in the area. The car ran just fine before I brought it in, maybe the engine was a bit loud it seemed beforehand, not sure if timing or serpentine belt related, or not. I didn't get service records with the car, CARFAX didn't show the belt changing, and the IRIS report didn't reveal the belt had been changed ever. Better safe than sorry, and thanks for the advice! (I'm used to DIY on the old 900's and to some extent the 9000's).
