Even though I said so some years ago, it doesn't work to row the shifter back and forth on the 9-3 and 9-5 to cure this problem.
It was something we did on the older NG900 when it was an issue with the grease inside the switch.
On these ones, it seems to be a problem where all the wires are soldered onto the circuit board inside the switch and they are all covered in epoxy putty after the work is completed.
When I broke open a switch it looked like the solder joint on this particular circuit was compromised even though it was hard to tell from the trauma I put on it trying to open the epoxy.
I have had a few where I could sit and massage the shifter back and forth between P and N and constantly holding the key in crank position and the starter did not flinch a bit and it was still the gear selector switch.
The other way to test is to rig a wire from battery with a push button and tie it into the gear selector harness wire after the gear switch and when the problem happens, push the button and if it works, it is most likely the gear switch.
