Just took my car to the mechanic to see where my serious oil leak is coming from. He put it on a lift and looked at it for an hour. I saw it myself, there is oil all over the bottom of the engine, even after cleaning the whole thing out a couple weeks ago. There was so much oil, you could see a trail of dried oil all the way down the exhaust past the catalytic convert to almost the rear wheels. It's leaking about a quart/300~ miles. Mechanic says everything is clean except from where the head gasket is and down. Some of it leaked down onto the transmission and made a little pool of oil just setting on top. It's pretty ugly. He thinks the head gasket is leaking, but tomorrow morning the shop owner is going to personally look at it for me and give me an official quote. His estimate was $800-900, which seems very reasonable for a head gasket, incl all gaskets to the top.
I have two concerns though: one being that V6 head gasket failures are very rare. But if anyone is unlucky enough to get it, it would be me. Another concern is whether or not this is caused by too much or too little oil pressure. My oil pressure sensor went out last month and it is brand new. It hasn't complained about oil pressure. I don't know what to do.
I don't know if it would be financially smarter to sell my car with an ~$850 estimate, or to fix it and keep it. I'm thinking I may want to just walk away from this car, wipe my hands clean, and get a more reliable model.
Any advice, I would seriously appreciate. I get my quote tomorrow.
