Fuel Pump Fail? Do These Symptoms Confirm It?

Just staretd my 1999 9-5 SE V6 with 168,000 km after it was parked for 24 hours. Car stared fine as usual and I drove off. About 2 blocks later, it JUST DIED. Engine cranks but no hint of firing.
I turned everything off... radio, ACC, to make things as quiet as possible. I listened carefully for the sound of the fuel pump priming the system when ignition switch is turned to ON before cranking. I am quite used to hearing the pump run for a few seconds before cutting out on pressure switch. NO SOUND FROM FUEL PUMP AT ALL.
I even lifted the back seat and removed the round pump access cover in the floor. I tapped all around the pump closure and tried cranking the engine again several times while rapping in the vicinity of the pump connections. Nothing. Fuse is okay.
Is there anything else at all that will prevent the fuel pump from running when ignition turned to ON before cranking?
Thanks,
Reg
P.S. Luicky me in the sense that this was 2 blocks from home on a nice Sunday afternoon, and my son was nearby with a tow strap in his car.
